When most people think of skincare, they automatically assume we are talking about women. And while women account for a vast majority of skincare products, a healthy skincare routine is just as important for men as it is for women. Especially if you are grappling with male acne.
Proper skin care should be a daily priority for men. A great skin care regimen goes beyond simply washing your face while showering (although that’s a great place to start). It’s a regimen designed to keep your skin healthy and in the best shape possible. Whether you are male or female – skincare matters!
Men’s skin care is different from women’s skin.
The Positives
Men have thick facial hair, which provides them with a stronger structure to their skin. This, coupled with more elastin fibers and collagen (elements of the skin that provide the face with strength and elasticity), lead to thicker skin. While thicker skin is better at resisting wrinkles, it’s still important to keep your skin healthy and nourished.
The Negatives
Facial hair glands produce oil, therefore a man’s skin is oilier than a woman’s skin. Oil can trap moisture, keeping skin hydrated and more youthful looking. However, the downside to oily skin is that it’s more prone to acne.
Men should create a daily skincare regimen.
A skin care regimen does not have to be complicated or take a lot of time or energy. At its most basic, men’s skin care should include a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
1. START WITH A CLEANSER
Clean skin promotes healthier-looking skin. Start with a liquid cleanser. A bar of soap can dry the skin, which can make it feel scratchy and itchy. If you have oily skin, prone to acne, choose a cleanser with an exfoliating agent such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide. These mild cleansers remove the top layer of dead skin, which helps to deeply cleanse the pores.
2. MOISTURIZE & HYDRATE
Once your skin is clean it allows your moisturizer to penetrate your skin. Moisturizing cream helps to keep the skin hydrated, leading to softer and more elastic skin. When it comes to moisturizing, knowing your skin type is essential to finding the right moisturizer. Sensitive skin requires products that are less irritating, oily skin requires a lighter moisturizer, and dry skin needs a thicker moisturizer. (For more information on the difference between moisturization and hydration, take a look at our recent blog).
3. DON’T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN
Men over 50 are twice as likely to develop melanoma as women. Sunscreen is an important part of any skincare regimen. However, most people forget about sunscreen unless they are heading to the beach. When you are outdoors the sun can damage your skin, which can lead to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. It’s important to apply sunscreen every day. Try to find a product that’s SPF 15 or higher.
Collagen Queen’s Corner: Tip of the Week
Moisturizing offers anti-aging benefits. Be sure to moisturize every day at the same time. When you apply your moisturizer after a shower it will lock in all of that steam to work wonders for your skin!
